Ministry Marketing 101

Writen by Tiffani Scalzo

Most ministries and nonprofits simply do not have the resources to invest in traditional advertising outlets like radio, TV or billboards. So how do you stretch your limited budget to create a robust marketing strategy that gets your message heard? Here are a few areas to focus on when developing your ministry marketing plan from scratch.

Professional Website

Your website is like the front door to your church or ministry, so be sure to make a good first impression. People will visit your site before they enter your building or choose to support your cause. An attractive, easy-to-navigate website builds trust and is crucial to winning over new members or donors. Since most of us search the web on our phones, your site must be mobile-friendly. Page load speed is important, too, since the average user will abandon a site if it takes longer than three seconds to load.

Social Media Strategy

Author and entrepreneur Seth Godin said, “Social media is a marathon, a gradual process in which you build a reputation. The best time to start was a while ago. The second best time to start is today.” While social media marketing can feel overwhelming, the key is to develop a sustainable strategy. Decide which platforms make sense for your audience and test different types of posts to see what gets the most engagement. You don’t have to post every day, but be consistent and consider batch-creating a month’s worth of content rather than always posting on the fly.

Monthly E-Newsletters

Email is still one of the most effective marketing tools available with a high return on investment. According to a 2024 survey, 88% of people check their inbox every day. The majority of respondents said they prefer short emails, and 44% said their primary reason for unsubscribing from a list is that the sender emails them too often. This is good news because it means you only need to send a quick message once or twice a month to keep your audience interested in what you have to offer.

Google Ad Grants

Did you know that Google offers free digital ads to eligible nonprofits? A simple application could be the only thing standing between you and $10,000 per month in search ads! Your ministry must be a registered 501(c)(3) organization to qualify, but once your charitable status has been verified, Google offers a step-by-step video series to help you plan, build and launch your first digital ad campaign.

QR Code Cards

While today’s marketing scene is predominantly digital, there is still a place for print! Physical materials are essential for in-person events to help people remember who you are and what you do. If cost is an issue, consider printing a business card with a QR code that links to your website. Small but mighty, a piece like this provides easy access to all of your ministry’s important details at an affordable price.

Community Involvement

Don’t be a stranger! Look for ways to partner with other ministries or businesses in your area. Attend community events or create your own. Any opportunity to meet new people and build relationships will help spread your message to those who need to hear it.
